This is one graphic as part of a large semester group project. The goal of this project was to study how the East Side’s air quality is disproportionally worse than that of the West Side. This, as the study would find, would be due to decades of environmental racism.

This specific assignment was towards the end of the semester, where we would propose design solutions, I studied the sidewalk quality of several different neighborhoods on the East Side and West Side. I noticed that the East Side includes many sidewalks of poor quality—cracked sidewalks, lack of seating or greenery, and much more. Many streets did not even include sidewalks. This example focuses on the area around The Broadway Market in Buffalo.

The Broadway Market is a very large market, with a very underutilized sidewalk. The sidewalk is very wide but it is empty—there is nothing that draws people to the area. I suggested a brick facade (a feature on many streets in Buffalo), outdoor seating, and available greenspace.
